Motor Oil Renewable Energy has commenced trial operations at its Stalpu 2 project in Romania, marking the company’s first hybrid asset to combine electricity generation with storage capabilities outside Greece.

The facility includes 63 megawatts (MW) of installed capacity, according to a company statement.

The move signals a strategic expansion for the Greek energy group, which has primarily focused on domestic renewable development.

By integrating storage with generation, the Stalpu 2 plant aims to address grid stability challenges common in markets with high renewable penetration.

This hybrid model allows for better management of intermittent power sources, potentially improving revenue stability through arbitrage opportunities.

Romania’s energy sector is currently undergoing significant regulatory shifts.
