Two artisanal miners were killed on Sunday after a gold mine collapsed in Gem Constituency, Siaya County, Kenya.

The incident occurred at Nyandiwa village in Bar Kalare, East Gem Ward, where the miners were buried while working underground.

Local authorities have confirmed the fatalities, marking another tragic event in the region's informal mining sector.

The accident underscores the persistent safety hazards faced by small-scale miners in Kenya, who often operate without formal safety protocols or regulatory oversight.

While the incident is localized, it draws attention to the broader challenges of regulating artisanal mining activities across the country.

Global gold markets, however, remain largely unaffected by the event.
