Lithuanian President Gitanas Nausėda has firmly denied that a secret Central Intelligence Agency (CIA) detention facility operated on Lithuanian territory, dismissing longstanding allegations as unfounded.
The president stated that the country has never acknowledged the existence of such a site and expressed continued confidence in the integrity of Lithuanian state institutions regarding the matter.
The comments come as media outlets have recently gained access to a location previously cited in reports as a potential site for the alleged black site.
Despite these renewed inquiries, the Lithuanian government maintains its position that no such facility was ever established or operated within its borders during the post-9/11 period.
This denial reinforces Lithuania’s official stance on its intelligence cooperation with the United States during the early 2000s.
While other European nations have faced varying degrees of scrutiny and legal challenges over their involvement in the CIA’s extraordinary rendition program, Lithuania has consistently rejected claims of hosting secret prisons.
