Malawi's government is actively seeking to license additional mobile network operators in a bid to intensify competition and lower the cost of digital services.

The initiative follows a wave of public discontent over recent hikes in mobile data bundle tariffs, which have strained affordability for consumers and businesses alike.

The push for market liberalization comes as the Consumers Association of Malawi (CAMA) issued a seven-day ultimatum to the Malawi Communications Regulatory Authority (MACRA) demanding action on rising prices.

CAMA has previously welcomed regulatory directives ordering incumbent operators Airtel Malawi and Telekom Networks Malawi (TNM) to compensate customers for overcharges, highlighting the ongoing tension between the duopoly and consumer advocates.

By opening the market to new entrants, authorities aim to disrupt the current market structure dominated by Airtel and TNM.

Increased competition is expected to pressure existing operators to review their pricing models and improve service quality, potentially benefiting the broader digital economy in the landlocked African nation.
