The Nigerian Ports Authority (NPA) has launched a $1 billion modernisation programme aimed at overhauling the country’s port infrastructure and alleviating chronic congestion at key trade hubs.

The initiative, detailed in an interview with NPA Managing Director Dr. Abubakar Dantsoho, focuses on digitalisation, improved cargo handling efficiency, and broader maritime reforms designed to boost trade and economic growth.

The move addresses long-standing logistical bottlenecks that have hampered Nigeria’s ease of doing business.

By targeting specific pain points in the port corridor, the authority seeks to reduce dwell times and streamline operations for stakeholders within the supply chain.

The programme represents a significant step in efforts to modernise the nation’s maritime sector and improve its competitiveness in regional trade.

While the announcement signals a commitment to structural improvement, the immediate impact on shipping costs and freight rates will depend on the pace of implementation and the extent to which digital tools are integrated into daily operations.
