Nigeria has officially launched a $200 million lithium mining and processing facility in Zamfara State, marking a tangible step in the country’s strategy to industrialize its critical minerals sector.
Governor Dauda Lawal unveiled the plant at Boko Village in the Zurmi local government area, signaling a shift from raw extraction toward domestic value addition.
The project is projected to create approximately 2,000 jobs, according to local reports.
While the immediate impact on global lithium supply chains remains marginal given the scale of existing production in Australia and China, the development underscores Nigeria’s ambition to position itself as a more integrated supplier in the electric vehicle battery ecosystem.
This move follows earlier announcements of Nigeria’s intent to accelerate industrialization in the critical minerals space.
The Zamfara facility represents one of the largest single investments in the sector to date, aiming to reduce reliance on exporting unprocessed ore.
