Serbian Oil Industry (NIS) has commenced trial operations of small gas-powered generation units at its Banatsko Milosevo and Srpska Crnja fields in northern Serbia.
The company stated that the plants will utilize gas produced directly at the sites for power generation, marking a shift toward on-site energy utilization rather than flaring or venting.
The move aligns with broader efforts by NIS to optimize asset efficiency and reduce environmental impact by capturing associated gas.
By converting previously underutilized gas into electricity, the operator aims to lower operational costs and support local grid stability.
This operational change reflects a growing trend among upstream producers to integrate small-scale power generation into field infrastructure.
Serbia has been actively working to diversify its energy mix, with recent planning documentation initiated for a larger gas-fired power plant in Niš.
