Peru’s ambitious Nueva Carretera Central highway project has been left out of the government’s approved supplementary credit, dealing a fresh blow to one of the country’s most significant infrastructure initiatives.
The mega-project, valued at over S/30 billion, was initially slated to receive S/400 million to accelerate construction, a figure later reduced to S/200 million before being entirely omitted from the final allocation.
This exclusion significantly delays the goal of reducing travel time between Lima and La Oroya in the Junín region to just three hours.
The funding gap underscores the fiscal constraints facing Peru’s public works agenda.
With the supplementary credit failing to cover the project, the timeline for completion remains uncertain, potentially prolonging the logistical bottlenecks that currently hinder regional connectivity.
