Qualcomm has finalized a significant agreement with BMW to supply chips for the German automaker’s vehicles, marking a major step in the semiconductor giant’s strategy to capture a larger share of the automotive market.

The deal underscores the intensifying competition among chipmakers to secure long-term contracts with original equipment manufacturers as vehicles become increasingly software-defined.

The partnership with BMW adds to a series of strategic moves by Qualcomm to reduce its reliance on the smartphone sector.

Earlier this year, the company identified Meta as the first major technology firm to adopt its data centre chips, a milestone that highlighted its growing footprint in artificial intelligence infrastructure.

Additionally, Qualcomm has been in advanced negotiations to acquire AI chip startup Modular in a transaction valued at approximately $4 billion, further signaling its ambition to expand its capabilities in high-performance computing.

For investors, the BMW deal validates Qualcomm’s pivot toward higher-margin, recurring revenue streams in automotive and data centres.
