Romania’s Chamber of Deputies has adopted legislation declaring a state of crisis in the fuel sector, clearing the final parliamentary hurdle for emergency measures designed to curb rising diesel prices.
The bill, which also includes provisions for reducing excise duties on diesel and limiting exports, was passed following a vote announced by PSD deputy Bogdan Ivan.
The lower house's approval follows the Romanian Senate's earlier endorsement of the framework, which established a mechanism for temporary, phased reductions in diesel excise duties during periods of oil market instability.
The Senate passed the measure with 116 votes in favor and eight abstentions, signaling broad cross-party support for the intervention.
The legislation aims to shield domestic consumers and businesses from volatile global energy costs by temporarily lowering the tax burden on diesel and ensuring adequate domestic supply through export restrictions.
This approach mirrors recent moves by other nations facing similar pressures, such as Brazil, which passed emergency credit measures to fund diesel subsidies earlier this year.
