The Russian ruble is entering a historically volatile period, with market analysts flagging August as a month of particular vulnerability for the currency.
This seasonal weakness comes as the dollar has already pushed the ruble to its weakest point in months, testing the psychological 80-ruble barrier.
The US dollar has traded above 80 rubles for the first time since early April, marking a renewed weakening of the Russian currency in recent sessions.
According to ICE data, the dollar reached 80.375 rubles during morning trading, signaling that the greenback’s broad-based strength is extending into emerging markets.
This move follows a period where the dollar index advanced significantly, closing June with its largest monthly gain in nearly a year.
Analyst Milchakova, cited in recent reporting, explained that August is traditionally considered an unfavorable month for the ruble due to seasonal capital outflows and reduced corporate tax payments.
