Russia's holdings of US government securities increased to $29 million in May, according to data released by the US Treasury Department.
The figure represents a rise from previous months, with the portfolio consisting primarily of $26 million in direct holdings.
14 trillion, Russia's incremental purchases highlight the ongoing demand for US debt even among sanctioned entities.
The increase in Treasury holdings comes as Russia's foreign trade surplus expanded significantly in May 2026, reaching $14.15 billion.
This surplus, up $6.78 billion compared with May 2025, provides the central bank with additional foreign currency inflows that can be deployed into safe-haven assets.
While Japan remains the largest holder of US government securities with approximately $1.14 trillion, Russia's incremental purchases highlight the ongoing demand for US debt even among sanctioned entities.
The move suggests that despite geopolitical tensions, US Treasuries remain a key component of Russia's reserve management strategy.
