Junior mining companies in South Africa are facing a severe liquidity constraint that is halting exploration activities, even as the government signals strong policy support for the sector.

The disconnect between available institutional capital and the high-risk nature of early-stage geological surveys is creating a bottleneck for new project development.

The Industrial Development Strategy, published on June 8, explicitly identifies mining as a priority area for economic growth.

In response, fresh capital is being directed toward exploration initiatives.

The Junior Mining Exploration Fund has been established with a R1 billion allocation, including a R400 million contribution from the government, aimed at bridging the financing gap for smaller operators.

However, industry analysis suggests that the current fund structures are insufficient to support the high-risk profile of early surveys.
