Sri Lanka has inaugurated its first Honorary Consulate in the Philippines, establishing a new diplomatic presence in Davao City.
The opening marks a tangible step in Colombo’s efforts to broaden its engagement with Southeast Asia, specifically targeting the southern Philippines region of Mindanao.
The ceremony took place during a visit by Sri Lankan Foreign Minister Vijitha Herath, who met with Philippine Foreign Affairs Secretary Ma Theresa Lazaro.
The establishment of the consular office is designed to facilitate closer trade, investment, and people-to-people links between the two nations, moving beyond traditional Colombo-Manila channels.
This diplomatic move aligns with Sri Lanka’s broader strategy to diversify its international partnerships.
Herath’s trip also includes participation in the 33rd ASEAN Regional Forum in Manila, underscoring the country’s desire to integrate more deeply into regional economic and security architectures.
