Standard Bank and Pepkor have initiated exploratory discussions regarding a potential partnership focused on personal banking services.
The proposed arrangement aims to leverage the asset-rich lender's financial expertise alongside the retail group's extensive physical network, which spans approximately 6,000 stores across South Africa.
According to Business Day, the collaboration is designed to launch an offensive in the personal banking sector, specifically targeting the mass market segment.
This development marks a strategic expansion for Pepkor, which has recently signaled its intent to deepen its involvement in financial services.
The retailer previously merged its fintech subsidiary, Flash, with payment provider Shop2Shop to create a standalone financial services business valued at R21 billion.
The new talks with Standard Bank suggest an acceleration of this pivot, moving beyond payments into broader banking products.
