Britain announced new sanctions on Thursday targeting illicit gold and finance networks that it says are funding rival factions in Sudan's ongoing civil war.

The UK Foreign Ministry stated the measures aim to disrupt the financial lifelines of groups involved in the conflict, which has devastated the country since April 2023.

The move comes as the European Union has already imposed a comprehensive ban on the purchase, import, and transfer of gold from Sudan.

Brussels also restricted the export of mercury and cyanide to the country, targeting materials essential for gold mining and exploitation.

These coordinated efforts seek to sever a critical funding stream for the warring parties.

Gold remains a primary source of revenue for Sudan's armed groups, with much of the output moving through informal cross-border channels.
