The United States has broadened its sanctions regime against Iran, specifically targeting the network associated with petroleum shipping magnate Mohammad Hossein Shamkhani and expanding restrictions into the cryptocurrency sector.

The Treasury Department announced the measures on Tuesday, aiming to further disrupt the country’s oil export capabilities and increase economic pressure on Tehran.

The move comes as tensions in the Gulf remain elevated following recent military exchanges.

Iran struck US bases in Kuwait and Bahrain earlier in June, leading to retaliatory US strikes and a persistent risk premium in energy markets. The new sanctions are designed to choke off the financial and logistical infrastructure that allows Iran to circumvent existing export bans, particularly through shadow fleets and digital payment channels.

Markets are likely to view this as a reinforcement of supply-side constraints.

While the immediate impact on Brent crude may be muted given the ongoing nature of the conflict, the targeting of specific shipping networks increases the operational risk for any vessels attempting to transport Iranian oil.
