Venezuela’s business community is pushing to activate the El Guamache port on Margarita Island as an alternative logistics hub following severe damage to the country’s primary gateway, La Guaira, from earthquakes on June 24.
Briceño, president of Fedecámaras Nueva Esparta, highlighted that the island possesses existing port infrastructure capable of absorbing some of the logistical burden.
The proposal aims to mitigate supply chain disruptions while the mainland facility undergoes extensive repairs.
The push for an alternative route comes as US Marines are actively engaged in urgent repair operations at La Guaira.
A senior administration official confirmed Monday that American troops are working around the clock to reopen the critical logistics hub, coinciding with an increased financial commitment from Washington to the recovery effort.
La Guaira serves as a vital artery for Venezuela’s imports and exports.
