The Beitbridge Bulawayo Railway (BBR) Company has commissioned a new US$1.5 million transhipment siding at West Nicholson in Gwanda, marking a tangible step forward for Zimbabwe’s lithium export logistics.
The facility, located in Matabeleland South, is designed to streamline the movement of lithium concentrate from mine sites to rail networks, reducing reliance on road transport and easing congestion at key transit points.
This development aligns with the government’s National Development Strategy 2 (NDS2), which identifies infrastructure investment as a primary driver of economic transformation.
By improving rail connectivity for critical minerals, the project seeks to lower shipping costs and enhance the competitiveness of Zimbabwean lithium in global markets, where supply chain efficiency is increasingly a differentiator.
The opening coincides with the launch of the first lithium concentrate export shipment via the new siding, signaling immediate operational readiness.
Industry observers note that such infrastructure upgrades are essential for sustaining growth in the mining sector, particularly as global demand for battery materials remains robust.
