Etsy Inc. has officially completed the sale of its fashion resale platform Depop to eBay Inc. for approximately $1.4 billion in cash, the company confirmed in a regulatory filing on July 30.
The transaction, which closed in March, marks a definitive end to Etsy’s ownership of the community-powered marketplace and represents a major strategic consolidation for the e-commerce sector.
The filing, an 8-K with critical severity items, also disclosed that Etsy has affirmed its guidance for the first quarter of 2026, signaling management’s confidence in the core business trajectory following the divestiture.
The completion of the deal provides Etsy with a substantial liquidity boost, allowing the company to focus resources on its primary peer-to-peer marketplace for unique and creative goods.
By exiting the competitive fashion resale space, Etsy aims to streamline its operations and reduce exposure to the highly saturated second-hand clothing market, where it faced intensifying competition from dedicated platforms.
The cash proceeds from the eBay transaction are expected to strengthen Etsy’s balance sheet, providing flexibility for future investments or capital returns to shareholders.
