An FBI agent has surrendered to authorities after allegedly stealing approximately $1 million in cryptocurrency from individuals the bureau was investigating.
Patrick Steven Yaroch contacted the Department of Justice last week to confess to the theft, according to reports from Moneyweb and Bloomberg.
Yaroch was fired by the FBI on July 31, the same day he was arrested.
He has been charged with interstate transportation and receipt of stolen goods, securities, and monies.
The case highlights the risks associated with digital asset seizures and the potential for insider threats within law enforcement agencies handling crypto-related investigations.
The incident underscores the growing complexity of crypto crime enforcement, where agents tasked with investigating digital asset fraud are themselves implicated in theft.
