Ghana has taken a concrete step toward restoring domestic refining capacity with the commissioning of the refurbished Crude Distillation Unit (CDU) at the Tema Oil Refinery (TOR).
President John Mahama led the ceremony, commending the refinery's management for the turnaround effort that has brought the critical infrastructure back online after years of operational challenges.
The move is significant for Ghana's energy security and macroeconomic outlook.
The refurbishment of the CDU is a prerequisite for the refinery to process crude oil into finished petroleum products.
By bringing this unit back into service, the state-owned facility is positioned to reduce the country's reliance on imported refined fuels, a major drain on foreign exchange reserves.
This development follows closely on the heels of a recent logistical milestone: the delivery of one million barrels of Ghana's indigenous Jubilee Medium Sweet Crude to the refinery.
