Qantas Airways has agreed to sell its entire 33.32% stake in Jetstar Japan in a share buyback deal valued at approximately S$67 million.

The transaction, signed with Japan Airlines and other shareholders, marks the end of the Australian group’s minority investment in the Tokyo-based low-cost carrier.

Qantas stated that the exit allows it to redirect capital toward its core operations in Australia, signaling a strategic retreat from peripheral international ventures.

The move comes as Qantas seeks to streamline its portfolio and strengthen its balance sheet.

By offloading the Jetstar Japan stake, the airline removes a non-core asset and repatriates funds that can be deployed for fleet upgrades, route expansion, or debt reduction within its primary Australian market.

The deal structure involves Jetstar Japan purchasing the shares directly from Qantas, rather than a third-party sale, ensuring a clean exit for the Australian parent.
