The Sui Southern Gas Company (SSGC) has attributed a stronger-than-usual gas smell in parts of Karachi to a temporary increase in odorant levels, rather than a leak or safety breach.
The utility stated that the heightened odor is a byproduct of ongoing testing at odorisation plants, which is part of the commissioning process for a new pipeline infrastructure project.
SSGC urged consumers to maintain their daily routines, asserting that the situation does not pose an immediate health or safety risk.
This development comes as the utility faces mounting scrutiny over its distribution practices in the region.
SSGC has been under pressure to restore consistent gas supplies to the F B Area, following accusations that the company has been prioritizing commercial consumers over residential households.
The odorant issue, while operationally contained, adds another layer of public relations challenge for the state-owned utility as it attempts to stabilize service delivery in Pakistan's economic hub.
