Apotex Health Corp. (APX.TO) has secured a temporary monopoly on the supply of generic semaglutide, marketed as Ozempic, in Canada.
The Toronto-based pharmaceutical company is currently the only manufacturer able to provide the generic version of the blockbuster weight-loss and diabetes drug to Canadian pharmacies.
The supply gap emerged after a manufacturing issue at a production facility in India forced at least two competing generic producers to halt operations.
According to reports from The Globe and Mail, these disruptions have sidelined the rivals for the foreseeable future, likely keeping Apotex as the sole supplier for the next several months.
This development underscores the fragility of the global pharmaceutical supply chain, particularly for high-demand generics.
With demand for semaglutide remaining robust, the temporary lack of competition could allow Apotex to capture significant market share and potentially command higher pricing power in the Canadian market during this window.
