Romania’s political instability has intensified as interim Prime Minister Ilie Bolojan declared that a minority government is the only viable path forward, effectively ruling out a coalition with the Social Democratic Party (PSD).

Bolojan, who also leads the National Liberal Party (PNL), stated that center-right parties have lost all confidence in their potential partners, making a traditional majority coalition unworkable.

The declaration marks a significant escalation in the ongoing governance crisis, which has left the country under an interim administration.

By dismissing the possibility of a PSD-led or PSD-inclusive government, Bolojan has narrowed the options for forming a stable executive, increasing the likelihood of early elections.

The interim leader suggested that snap polls could be held as early as this autumn or in the spring of next year.

This development adds to a broader wave of political uncertainty across Europe, with similar pressures mounting in the UK where Reform UK leader Nigel Farage has called for a general election.
