Tropical Storm Bertha forms in the Gulf of Mexico

The second named storm of the Atlantic season has developed, though current tracks show no immediate threat to Belize or major shipping lanes.

Tropical Storm Bertha, the second named storm of the Atlantic season, has formed far to Belize's north, but the country's fair and warm spell continues undisturbed, with the storm tracking toward the United States and away from our shores.

According to the National Meteorological Service, at 6:00 a.m., Tropical Storm Bertha was centered near 28.8N 86.2W, about 100 miles south-southwest of Panama City, Florida, moving northwest at 5 mph with maximum sustained winds of 50 mph. The storm strengthened from the tropical depression that formed in the same waters earlier this week, and its path continues to point at the US Gulf coast, far from Belize. Elsewhere in the region, tropical cyclone formation is not expected over the next 48 hours.

At home, the forecast is a repeat of the pleasant pattern Belizeans have been enjoying. Mainly fair and warm weather continues, with mostly sunny skies today and clear to partly cloudy conditions tonight. Showers will be isolated, with the chance for a few more over southern Toledo tonight.

Temperatures along the coast will reach a high of 89 degrees Fahrenheit (32 Celsius) and a low of 82 (28 Celsius). Inland areas will be hot, climbing to 94 degrees Fahrenheit (34 Celsius) and dropping to 73 (23 Celsius). In the hills, expect a high of 82 degrees Fahrenheit (28 Celsius) and a cool low of 66 (19 Celsius).

At sea, winds will blow from the east at 10 to 20 knots, with choppy seas and waves of 3 to 5 feet.

Looking ahead to Wednesday and Wednesday night, the mainly fair and warm conditions continue, with only isolated showers expected.
