The United Arab Emirates is planning to construct a new port and container terminal in Fujairah, located on the Gulf of Oman, to circumvent the Iranian closure of the Strait of Hormuz.
The Financial Times reported the development, noting that while Fujairah already possesses a harbor, it currently lacks the necessary infrastructure to function as a major export hub capable of handling the volume displaced from the strait.
This strategic infrastructure investment directly addresses the persistent shipping risk and geopolitical pressure on global trade routes.
By developing alternative export corridors on the eastern coast, the UAE seeks to insulate its energy exports and commercial shipping from disruptions in the narrow waterway.
The move aligns with broader regional efforts to mitigate the leverage held by Iran over global energy flows.
The project complements existing initiatives to reduce reliance on the Strait of Hormuz.
