President Bola Tinubu on Tuesday congratulated Team Nigeria for its impressive outing at the 2026 Commonwealth Games in Glasgow, Scotland, where the country won 24 medals. Nigeria finished the Games with 10 gold, seven silver and seven bronze medals, a performance the President described as a reflection of the resilience, discipline and determination of Nigerian athletes. In a statement issued by his Special Adviser on Information and Strategy, Bayo Onanuga, Tinubu said the athletes had flown the nation's flag with dignity and pride throughout the competition. He said the medals were "a testament to their hard work and perseverance," adding that the experience gained by the athletes would lay the foundation for even greater achievements in future international competitions while inspiring young Nigerians to embrace commitment and national service. "Whether on the podium or through courageous performances in the competition, every member of Team Nigeria has represented our nation with honour, dignity, and pride. "On behalf of the Government and the people of the Federal Republic of Nigeria, I express profound appreciation to our athletes, coaches, technical officials, medical personnel, administrators, and all those whose dedication and sacrifice made Nigeria's participation at the Games possible," the President said. The President also commended the leadership of the Nigeria Olympic Committee and the National Sports Commission for their commitment to sports development and support for athletes. The PUNCH had earlier reported that Team Nigeria concluded its campaign at the Glasgow 2026 Commonwealth Games with 24 medals comprising 10 gold, seven silver and seven bronze. The medal haul represents another commendable outing for Nigeria at the Games, although it falls short of the country's best performances in recent editions. Nigeria won 35 medals: 12 gold, nine silver and 14 bronze at the 2022 Commonwealth Games in Birmingham after topping the African medals table. At the 2018 Gold Coast Games in Australia, Team Nigeria returned home with 24 medals comprising nine gold, nine silver and six bronze, while the country recorded an even stronger performance at the 2014 Commonwealth Games, also held in Glasgow, with 36 medals made up of 11 gold, 11 silver and 14 bronze.
