Sri Lanka has set a target to increase its total export earnings to more than USD 36 billion by 2030, according to Wasantha Samarasinghe, the country’s Minister of Trade, Commerce, Food Security and Cooperative Development.

The announcement outlines a significant expansion of the nation's trade ambitions, aiming to roughly double current annualized output levels over the next four years.

3 billion in the first five months alone, signaling a steady upward trajectory in trade volumes.

The goal reflects the government's broader strategy to stabilize the economy and reduce reliance on external borrowing by boosting foreign currency inflows through merchandise and services exports.

The target comes against a backdrop of improving trade performance.

Sri Lanka’s total export earnings surpassed USD 9 billion during the first half of 2026, marking a notable recovery for the sector.

Earlier in the year, provisional figures from Sri Lanka Customs showed that the export sector had generated more than USD 7.3 billion in the first five months alone, signaling a steady upward trajectory in trade volumes.

Correction (1 August 2026): an earlier version overstated the multiple implied by the 2030 target.
