Meta has agreed to appear before Indian regulators to address policy and technical compliance issues, according to Ministry of Electronics and Information Technology (MeitY) Secretary S Krishnan.
The company is expected to present its explanations within the next seven to ten days, as the government continues its assessment of the platform's operations in the country.
The summons comes as MeitY examines the matter more broadly, having sought views from several messaging platforms as part of its regulatory review.
This development adds a new layer of operational risk for Meta in one of the world's largest digital markets, where compliance with local data and content rules has become increasingly stringent.
The regulatory pressure coincides with other legal challenges for the company in India.
The Bombay High Court has scheduled an August 5 hearing for a defamation lawsuit filed by Indian Union Minister Nitin Gadkari against Meta, X Corp, and Google LLC, alleging the platforms hosted harmful deepfakes.
